The film tells the story of some folks in Serbia having to deal with the consequences of the war. Most of them don't have to go to the army (yet), but have to live between ruins with bombs falling nearly every day. Although the motto is surviving these days, they try to live a life as normal as possible to be up against the ugly face of war - each one on his own as it seems. One day someone has the idea to build up a basket for playing basketball. Although his idea is perceived as being fool in such times, soon all the youngsters and the older folks - parents and others watching the things going on in the streets - as well as a concurrent street gang are being attracted by the idea.

Based on Terry Southern's satirical novel, a sendup of Voltaire's -Candide-. The dumb loser Frank Muzzy invites his alcoholic friend and gravedigger Eddie to raise some money bootlegging US$ 250,000.00 in cigarettes for the powerful mobster Spider to Mexico. However, their truck catches fire and they lose the load. Frank becomes desperate to raise the amount, and hides himself with Eddie in the house of his mother. Frank forces Eddie to exhume her body, but they do not find the jewel. In the early years of World War II, a German U-boat (U-37) sinks Allied shipping in St. Lawrence Bay and then tries to evade Canadian Military Forces seeking to destroy it by sailing up to Hudson Bay. The U-boat's Fanatical Nazi captain sends some members of his crew to look for food and other supplies at a Hudson Bay Company outpost. No sooner than the shore party (lead by Lieutenant Hirth) reaches the shore, the U-boat is spotted and sunk by the Canadian Armed Forces leaving the six members of the shore party stranded in Canada. The Nazi Lieutenant then starts to plan his crews' return to the Fatherland. He needs to reach the neutral United States or be captured. Along the way they meet a variety of characters each with their own views on the war and nationalism. In this film Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger show their ideas of why the United States should join the Allied fight against the Nazis.

A Navy commando, Lt. (jg) Ken Braden, is sent on a secret mission to photograph a Japaneses code book. He's to be taken there aboard a submarine commanded by Paul Stevenson and then return without the Japanese knowing they ever been there. Stevenson is a by-the-book captain who follows his operational orders to the letter. That approach led to the death of a member of his crew on his last mission and he's lost the respect and support of his crew. Braden and Stevenson don't quite hit it off at first but the eventually develop a respect for one another.
